About this collection

Fore-edge paintings are carefully-painted illustrations on the edge of a book. When the book's pages are fanned out, the scene becomes visible. Many scenes are painted to correspond to a book's subject or topic. We have photographed the fore-edge paintings in our collection, some of which are visible by turning the pages in different directions or by fanning the corner of the pages.
